Court instructions and manufacturers’ response
During the hearing before a division bench of Justices Pratibha M Singh and Shail Jain, the film’s counsel assured to acknowledge the collective sacrifice of these soldiers, especially the Ahir (Yadav) community, in both the theatrical and over-the-top releases. The direction comes in response to a PIL by the Samyukt Ahir Regiment Morcha, which sought explicit recognition of the bravery of the Ahir (Yadav) in the film.
Controversy over film portrayal
The PIL argued that out of 120 soldiers of the company, 114 were martyred and 113 belonged to the Ahir (Yadav) community. Critics claim that the film distorts historical facts by focusing primarily on Major Shaitan Singh – fictionalized as Major Bhati (played by Farhan Akhtar) – thereby undermining the group’s regimental identity and wider community contribution. The petitioners not only sought factual correction, but also changed the name of the film to “120 Veer Ahir” and included the names of all the soldiers and a proper disclaimer.
Court decision and film release
The court acknowledged the delay in production of the film, which is scheduled to release in theaters on November 21, and refused to direct a change in the title. It disposed of the petition by ordering that the names of all soldiers be included in the end credits, thereby ensuring collective acknowledgment and respect for their sacrifice.
