he International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) finds itself in the whirlpool of a major controversy after the Kerala Chalachitra Academy has decided not to screen six films at IFFK after strong objection was raised by the Ministry of External Affairs.
6 films withdrawn from IFFK after MEA’s objection
The ministry also warned of legal action, saying the six films were against the country’s foreign policy and could affect national security.
In an exclusive interview, Resul Pookutty, president of Kerala Chalachitra Academy, which manages films for IFFK, explained the situation. “Out of the nineteen films that were sent to the Ministry of External Affairs, twelve films were approved and one film we were not supposed to show anyway because it did not have a CBFC certificate. And the remaining six films were refused screening.”
Resul said that he has voluntarily agreed to stop the screening of those six films. “I had the support of the Government of Kerala to screen these six films, but I opposed it because the Chief Secretary’s note suggested that we could comply with the I&B order… I was told that the consent for these films was not given without regard to India’s foreign policy… The Chalachitra Academy thought that as Indians we should respect our national interest first rather than show defiance in screening certain films. This was entirely the decision of the Academy, and I stand by that.”
