National Award winner Onir, widely considered as one of the most courageous and path-breaking voices in Indian cinema, has been awarded the Gay Bombay Icon Award, one of India’s most prominent LGBTQ+ organizations, Gay Bombay, one of the most prominent LGBTQ+ organizations.
Onir honored the Gay Bombay Icon Award: “Digestible”
Established in 1998, Gay Bombay has consistently worked to promote LGBTQ+ rights in India by creating a safe place for the community through workshops, film screening, awareness drives and social programs. The Gay Bombay Icon Award recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the queue representation and advancing rights in the society.
India’s first openly queuing filmmaker, long has been a leading LGBTQ narratives in the leading Indian cinema. Through his films, activeness and advocacy, Onir has given visibility to stories and identities that were marginalized for a long time, breaking the stereotypes and pushing for inclusion within the industry and beyond. The body of his work has been observed globally for its authenticity, sensitivity and courage.
Speaking about Manyata, Onir said, “For being honored by Gay Bombay, an organization that has been an integral part of India’s Quir Yatra is deeply humble. When I started as a filmmaker, I often used to feel alone in the industry, which was not for many people, who did not listen to myself unknowingly.
