A legal dispute has emerged ahead of the release of the upcoming film RightStarring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam. Daughter of late Smt. Shah Bano Begum Siddiqa Begum has issued a notice to the filmmakers and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), demanding a halt to the release, promotion and screening of the film.

According to the notice obtained by NDTV, the film allegedly depicts the personal life of Shah Bano, including private family events and social situations, without the consent of her legal heirs. The notice sent by lawyer Tausif Z Warsi on behalf of Siddiqa Begum is addressed to Right Director Suparn Verma, Production Partner Junglee Pictures, Promoter Baweja Studios and CBFC.
Siddiqa Begum claims that she is the legitimate biological daughter and one of the surviving legal heirs of Shah Bano. He argues that the film was conceived and promoted without his or his family’s permission. The notice describes it as “unauthorized use, distortion and commercialization of private life events”, which it says violates Indian law.
The legal notice cites several precedents, including a 2017 Supreme Court decision Justice KS Puttaswamy (Retd) vs Union of IndiaWhich recognizes the right to privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution. It also cites a 2003 Delhi High Court decision ICC Development (International) Ltd v Arvi EnterprisesWhich prevents the commercial exploitation of a person’s likeness or life story without permission.
Furthermore, the notice warned that any depiction that could “tarnish the image, moral character or social perception” of Shah Bano or her family could amount to defamation. Filmmakers are also reminded of the provisions of the Copyright Act, 1957, which confer moral rights on authors and their heirs. The notice also cited CBFC guidelines in support, which prohibit violation of privacy and defamatory portrayal of individuals.
The notice asks all parties to immediately stop the release, promotion or screening Right In any format, including theater and digital platforms, unless written consent is obtained from Shah Bano’s heirs. It requests the CBFC to withhold or cancel certification for the film until this consent is verified. The notice gives the parties seven days to comply before legal action is initiated.
