Kantara Chapter 1 box office collection: Earns Rs 680 crore in India after 4 weeks, faces digital roadblock

Kantara Chapter 1 raised Rs. Earned Rs. It earned around Rs 40.25 crore in its fourth week at the Indian box office, taking its total to Rs. Approximately Rs 679.50 crore. The hold from the third week is fantastic, with only a 53 percent decline from the third week due to holidays. There was a decline in business on weekdays, but it is natural that it has gone this far and it has fallen even more due to the extended holiday period.

The day-wise box office collections of Kantara Chapter 1 in India are as follows:

Day Total
First week (8 days) Rupee. 384.50 crores.
week two Rupee. 169.00 crores.
week three Rupee. 85.75 crores.
fourth friday Rupee. 6.50 crores.
fourth saturday Rupee. 10.00 crores.
fourth sunday Rupee. 11.00 crores.

fourth tuesday Rupee. 4.00 crores.
fourth wednesday Rupee. 2.75 crores.
fourth Thursday Rupee. 2.50 crores.
Total Rupee. 679.50 crores.

The price of the film is now less than Rs. 15 crores becoming the highest grossing film of the year in India and approximately Rs. Rs 20 crore less. 700 crore figure. Normally, from where the film stands today, one would expect it to cross these and close around Rs. 710-720 crores.

However, the film faced a hurdle in the form of its early digital release today, which may drag down its business. This is not free streaming but rental, the difference hardly matters, as it would equally encourage piracy. It remains to be seen what effect this has on the business. It is still possible to cross Chhava, although Rs. 700 crores may prove to be a close call.

Also, it’s a shame that such a premium film was dumped on digital just four weeks after its release. A film will remain on digital forever. It doesn’t matter whether it’s released there today or four weeks from today or ideally six months from now. Many people argue that films do not perform well after four weeks, but this is completely wrong. The disadvantage is not just that a film gets missed after a digital release, but it also forces the audience to think that when the film is coming out for free in four weeks, why not just wait instead of spending money and time on it? And at that point, you’re killing your own business, maybe not in the short term, but definitely in the long run.
