upcoming war epic 120 braveThis film of Farhan Akhtar, playing the role of Param Vir Chakra awardee Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, has got into legal debate just days before its scheduled release. The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently heard a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking to change the name of the film to ‘120 Veer Ahir’ to better honor the Ahir soldiers who fought in the historic battle of Rezang La.
Punjab and Haryana HC rejects PIL seeking name change of 120 Bahadur
The court raised questions about the sensitivity of the film’s title.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Sheel Nagu addressed the petitioners of the Samyukt Ahir Regiment Morcha and the families of those killed in action, and expressed surprise at the insistence on changing the name. “Why are you so sensitive about what the name of the film should be, should a film be named so and so? The bravery of the soldiers will be visible in that 3 hour or two and a half hour film,” the Chief Justice remarked, insisting that the cinematic portrayal respects all 120 men.
Petitioners argued for collective recognition
The petitioners cited constitutional concerns over likeness and accurate recollection, alleging that the film single-handedly glorifies Major Singh, erasing the regimental identity and collective sacrifice of the 117 Ahir soldiers who fought alongside him. “No single name or face can rightfully monopolize the achievements that rightfully belong to the entire brotherhood of martyrs,” the petition argued.
Producers and defendants debate film’s integrity
Advocate Abhinav Sood, representing producer Excel Entertainment, countered that both the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) and the Defense Ministry cleared the film. Sood asserted that the PIL was premature, based only on a three-minute trailer, and assured the court of widespread acceptance within the film’s credits and narrative.
The central government assured the court that the representation against the release was under consideration and a decision would be taken within two days. In response, the High Court disposed of the petition and granted leave to reconsider the case if any further complaints arise after the acquittal.
120 brave It dramatizes the infamous India-China battle of 1962 at Rezang La, which was fought by Charlie Company – a unit consisting mainly of Ahir soldiers under the command of Major Singh. The film’s release is scheduled for November 21 and promises to showcase acts of bravery, stamina and camaraderie at altitudes of 18,000 feet and sub-zero temperatures.
