Aamir Khan brought the final fireside chat of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to a rousing close, giving the packed Kala Academy what felt like an intense masterclass in cinema. Moderated by acclaimed film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the session was titled ‘The Narrative Architect of Social Transformation and Inclusivity’ and it soon turned into a candid, insightful and deeply personal conversation with the superstar.

Aamir begins by revisiting the origins of his love for stories, recalling memories of his grandmother’s stories and the magic of Hawa Mahal on the radio – moments he credits with shaping his creative instincts. He said, “I have always been attracted to stories. They were a big part of my childhood and that attraction has guided every choice I have made as an actor.”
What emerged during the session was that Aamir believed in intuition rather than calculation. “I can’t repeat myself. Once I’ve done a certain kind of film, I want to move on. I look for stories that feel fresh, unique and creatively exciting,” he said. Rejecting the idea of trend-driven filmmaking, he said, “I choose films based solely on my emotional enthusiasm for the story, even if it goes completely against the norm.”
He reflected on how some of his biggest hits were once considered risky. He said, “Most of my decisions have been impractical by industry standards. Even when we made Lagaan, Javed saab advised us not to do it. Overall, I should not have become a star – I broke every rule. But somehow, those unconventional choices connected with people and I am deeply grateful.”
Aamir clarified that his films on social subjects come naturally. “I never choose a film thinking about what social topic to address next. I only look for scripts that excite me. In one of the biggest revelations of the evening, Aamir confirmed a major professional change. “Once I complete the current list of projects I’m building-Lahore 1947, Mubarak PatelAnd a few others—work on all of them will be completed in the next few months. After that, I am completely shifting my focus from production to acting.” He further added, “From here on, every script I hear will be only for me as an actor. It’s a significant change, but it’s the right time to completely dedicate myself to acting again.”
He also shared that he is currently listening to new scripts. He said, “A lot of people have excited me – two or three in particular – but I’m still in the process of choosing.”
Elaborating on his long-standing desire to direct, Aamir said, “Directing is actually my greatest love. Filmmaking is what I enjoy the most… But the day I consciously decide to direct, I will probably stop acting, because it will completely drain me. That’s why I’m delaying that decision right now.”
