Ajith Kumar’s 2011 release Mankatha returns to theaters this weekend. The much-hyped action thriller directed by Venkat Prabhu garnered record advance bookings on its opening day in Tamil Nadu. According to estimates, the film grossed more than Rs 20 crore. It recorded an advance of Rs 2.20 crore on the first day in its home state, the largest pre-sale ever recorded for a re-release film.
Mankatha overtook the previous record holder, Ghilli, who had raised a whopping Rs. The film earned Rs 2.15 crore on the first day of its re-release in Tamil Nadu. Thalapathy Vijay starrer this film was a huge success at the box office. It still holds the record for the highest-grossing re-release of all time in Tamil Nadu, earning over Rs. 26.50 crores.
The way Mankatha has been progressing, the film is all set to have a solid start at the box office. It will be interesting to see whether Ajith Kumar’s film beats Gilli’s first day box office record or not.
Mankatha is the story of Vinayak Mahadevan, a cunning and suspended Mumbai police officer, who joins a gang planning to steal Rs 500 crore of illegal IPL betting. However, his real agenda is to deceive everyone and grab the cash for himself.
His plan begins to spiral out of control as Vinayak becomes betrayed and manipulated, while he engages in a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game with a relentless police officer and local goons. The film unfolds with several twists and turns, revealing that no one is as they seem, with Vinayak eventually declaring himself the “kingmaker”.
Apart from Ajith Kumar, the film also stars Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Raai Lakshmi, Anjali, Andrea Jeremiah, Vaibhav, Ashwin Kakumanu, Premji Amaren and others in lead roles.
