Dhurandhar: The Revenge has become the highest-grossing Indian film ever in Australia, doing so in just ten days of its release. The Ranveer Singh starrer collected AUD 568K on its second Saturday, taking its total to AUD 5.99 million, surpassing the lifetime earnings of its predecessor Dhurandhar (AUD 5.60 million).
Today, the film has set a new benchmark for Indian cinema by crossing AUD 6 million, and will cross AUD 6.40 million by EOD. It still has significant momentum left, grossing nearly AUD 1.40 million in its second weekend. The film will benefit from the Easter holidays in the coming week, although there will be competition from Hollywood releases. Nevertheless, the film is comfortably on track to cross AUD 7 million and has a strong chance of reaching AUD 8 million by the end of its run.
For perspective, that would be about 40 percent more than the previous all-time record and about 60 percent ahead of the best-performing non-fantasy title, Animal. The Australian market has seen a rapid growth of Indian films post-pandemic, but with that in mind, the way Dhurandhar: The Revenge has demolished the existing standards is astonishing.
Taking a look at some history of Indian films in Australia. 3 Idiots (AUD 1.13 million) was the first film to reach AUD 1 million in 2009. After that, the record earners were mainly Aamir Khan’s films, Dhoom 3 (AUD 1.75 million), PK (AUD 2.11 million) and Dangal (AUD 2.62 million). Baahubali 2 took a big jump in 2017 with AUD 4.40 million, albeit due to extremely high ticket prices. Things stalled a bit in the late 2010s, but 2022 has a big challenge, coming out of the pandemic, and now Dhurandhar: The Revenge is probably showing promise there.
