In the east-Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) was the era Dev D (2009) which made Anurag Kashyap a major force to be reckoned with. It gained popularity and 17 years after its release, it is all set to be re-released in theaters on April 24.
BREAKING: Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D to re-release on April 24
According to an article in Bombay Times, the Abhay Deol-Kalki Koechlin-Mahie Gill starrer will be back on the big screen, but only in select theatres. It also had quotes from Anurag Kashyap, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and music director Amit Trivedi. Anurag said, “To see Dev D Coming back to the big screen feels special. This is a film to be experienced collectively, with Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography powering Amit Trivedi’s music and narrative. I’m curious to see how the new generation reacts to it.”
Kalki Koechlin revealed, “I remember being so nervous about my Hindi lines that every morning on the set, I would practice all my vowels and consonants in Devanagari to get the pronunciation right. The best thing about shooting the film was that I didn’t know anything about filmmaking, because it meant I didn’t have to care about camera angles or how I would look on camera.”
Interestingly, it was lead actor Abhay Deol who suggested the idea of the film to Anurag. He said, “I remember when I used to tell the idea of Dev DThe most common reaction I got was that it was ‘too artistic’ to make. When I narrated it to Anurag, I did not tell him that it was a contemporary treatment. I just told a love story. He had no idea what I was actually narrating, and when I told him it was a contemporary Devdas, he remained silent for 20 minutes, imagining it in his mind. He liked the idea of presenting it with a musical score that would take the story forward one song at a time. Although he went with a different ending (my idea was Dev dying in the end), my idea was to highlight Devdas’s misogyny and highlight the resilience of women. This is my only idea on which the film was made.”
Amit Trivedi’s career also got a boost with Dev D. He added, “Each song was deeply rooted in narrative, whether it was the wild energy ’emotional torture’ or the quiet pain of ‘Eyes yearn’. When the film released, something changed for me and helped me find my voice as a musician.”
