plot
Set in Kerala in 1958, Pallichattambi is the story of a village called Kaniyar and its residents. As the policies of the new government collide with those of the Church, the pastor decides that they need a “Christopher” who will serve as a protector against the authorities.
What happens when a pallichattambi (chattambi means goon) is recruited for this job, and how he deals with the official forces opposing the church, is shown in the film.
What works in Pallichattambi
Discovering a period from Kerala’s Renaissance timeline has often been a difficult challenge. With this in mind, the production has invested heavily in creating the setting, making it believable that the story takes place in a different era, whether through costumes or props.
With Tovino Thomas’s impressive performance, the actor has added another versatile role to his filmography, which is truly in line with his stardom. The interesting premise and promising concept make the film a perfect recipe for a massive action entertainer.
However, despite the strong premise and competent lead, the show-stealer turns out to be another star’s cameo appearance. The cameo serves its purpose well, with the actor bringing a unique aura even in limited screen time.
Furthermore, Jake Bejoy’s music serves as a strong support, with many of the background scores hitting the right notes and the songs leaving a lasting impression. Additionally, the action set pieces stand out as the strongest technical aspect of the film, packing a solid punch.
What doesn’t work in Pallichattambi
Pallichattambi It largely misses the mark due to its stereotypical, silly and sometimes annoying story. The writing fails to live up to the initial world-building and lacks the depth it initially promised.
Instead of developing into a story highlighting valor and heroism, the film slowly turns into a tiresome watch, with the sub-plots becoming more and more depressing by the end.
Director Dijo Jose Antony, who had earlier given a strong film like Jana Gana Mana, is once again struggling to maintain consistency. Similar to some of his other middling works, Pallichattambi proved to be another underwhelming outing – a film that was heavily promoted before its release, but failed to deliver with conviction. The lack of clear vision and weak storytelling grammar explains his inability to execute a compelling people-acter.
Despite having a solid concept, the script never quite comes together, making the story tedious to follow. The dialogue is dull and largely forgettable. On the technical front, the cinematography remains substandard, while the editing becomes increasingly messy near the climax.
Display
Tovino Thomas effectively portrays the central character of Pallichattambi, delivering a performance that exudes depth and intensity. His gentleness serves as a major saving grace.
Kayadu LoharAs the co-lead, shares natural chemistry with the hero, making the romantic subplot feel refreshing compared to the usual period action dramas.
However, the standout performance comes from the cameo appearance of a Malayalam cinema superstar.
