Marathi film Raja Shivaji made Rs. Earned around 14.50 crores on Sunday, taking it to Rs. 14.50 crores in its opening weekend. 39.75 Crore (Rs 32.50 Crore) approx. Most of these collections are from Marathi edition worth Rs. around 26.50 crores, but the Hindi versions also contributed well, earning Rs. Approximately 13.25 crores. The Hindi version is also doing well, the film is showing good growth on Sunday, so it may do well here too to some extent.
The film, starring Riteish Deshmukh, has achieved the biggest ever opening for any Marathi film, far ahead of anything the industry has seen so far. Having said that, it was largely expected as the cost and scale were much larger than anything done before, and there has been precedent for Hindi films based on Maratha Empire figures like Chhaya and Tanhaji earning extraordinary numbers in Maharashtra. Raja Shivaji was not chasing the benchmark of Marathi films but of Chhava and Tanaji.
In the state of Maharashtra, the film grossed Rs. Around 28.75 crores over the weekend, higher than the first day on Sunday. Tanhaji and Chhawa showed a very strong foothold in the state; Generally, big actors of Marathi film industry also do the same. In such a situation, it will be interesting to see how high the film can reach. If it’s anything like the precedent, it should clear Rs. From here the figure of Rs 100 crore in the state, possibly even more. The highest grossing film in the state is Chhaava, which earned Rs. 300 million. The biggest Marathi movies are Sairat and Bapan Bhari Deva which cost around Rs. 90 crores.
