Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap has landed in legal trouble after a Surat court directed the police to register a criminal case against him over his alleged comments about the Brahmin community on social media.

Anurag Kashyap faces legal trouble over alleged remarks on Brahmin community; Surat court gave orders for FIR
The court of Judicial Magistrate First Class AS Jani passed the order on Saturday following a private complaint filed by lawyer and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Kamlesh Rawal. According to reports, the court found that there appear to be sufficient grounds to examine whether the filmmaker’s posts could harm the reputation of a particular community and contribute to social tension.
As part of the order, the court directed authorities to register a case under sections related to promoting enmity between groups, intentional insult with intent to disturb public peace and allegedly disseminating misleading information.
The complaint was filed by Rawal, who belongs to the Brahmin community and alleged that Kashyap’s post on X contained objectionable comments targeting Brahmins. According to the complaint, the controversy started when the filmmaker reacted to criticism over the trailer launch of a Hindi film flowers In April last year.
The complainant claimed that Kashyap not only posted objectionable comments but also continued to make comments while replying to users opposing his views online. Further allegations were made that the post insulted the wider Brahmin community and had the potential to create division between social groups.
In the complaint submitted before the court, Rawal reportedly argued that public figures like Kashyap hold significant influence due to their work in cinema and entertainment. The complaint states that actors and filmmakers are widely followed by audiences of all age groups, making their public statements highly influential.
The petition also referred to an old social media post allegedly made by Kashyap in January 2020, where he had criticized the central government and used words that the complainant said were objectionable towards Hindus.
The report further states that the filmmaker was previously issued several notices and summons in connection with the case. However, according to the complainant, Kashyap did not respond to him, following which a non-bailable warrant was reportedly issued against him.
At present, Anurag Kashyap has not publicly responded to the latest order of the court.
