Supreme Court rejects Shahrukh Khan’s plea challenging his vow renewal approval

According to a report by NDTV India, the Supreme Court has dismissed a Mumbai resident’s petition challenging the approval given for the renovation of Mannat, the bungalow of actor Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan in seaside Bandra. The court said that as long as homeowners follow the law, they are free to renovate their properties.

The petitioner had argued that the environmental norms as well as necessary statutory clearances had not been followed for the project.

The petitioner argued that clearance was required from the Environment Ministry.

Senior advocate Shoaib Alam, representing the petitioner, argued that clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change was required for the project and the alleged violations still continued. He said such approval becomes mandatory for projects costing more than Rs 5 crore.

During the hearing, the bench raised questions on the intentions of the petitioner behind the petition. Chief Justice Surya Kant said that the bungalow is a private residence and the people living in it are entitled to make changes or renovations within the ambit of law.

The petitioner’s counsel requested that the case be sent back to the National Green Tribunal, but the Supreme Court rejected this request. The bench also made it clear that a person’s fame or celebrity status has no bearing on how the case is being considered.

NGT has already approved renewal once

The dismissal comes after the National Green Tribunal had earlier rejected an appeal against the environment and coastal clearance granted for the renovation and expansion of the bungalow. The NGT had ruled that the project complied with environmental regulations, allowing the expansion work to proceed.

Social activist Santosh Daundkar had filed an appeal before the NGT in March 2025 challenging the coastal regulation zone clearance issued by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority on January 3. The appeal claimed that the approval process for the expansion of Mannat failed to comply with environmental norms, a charge the parties associated with the project denied, saying that all necessary permissions were obtained as per the rules.

The controversy stems from Gauri Khan’s proposal to add two additional floors to the six-storey annexe building in Mannat. With the Supreme Court now refusing to consider the challenge, the expansion project seems to be moving ahead unhindered.
