This development comes after an earlier update from filmmaker Aanand L Rai, who addressed rumors about the film being released in 2023. At the time, Rai had denied reports that Akshay Kumar had backed out of the project, but admitted that it was put on hold due to some challenges. He had said, “Yes, it is true. We are not making this film at the moment. There are some technical issues. Some factual clarifications
need to be given.”Gurkha Originally announced in October 2021 as a collaboration between Aanand L Rai’s Color Yellow Productions and Cape of Good Films. The film was to be directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan and was conceived as a biographical war drama based on the life of Major General Ian Cardozo, a decorated officer of the 5th Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army.
Akshay Kumar was to play the role of the legendary war hero who played a vital role in the India-Pakistan war of 1962, 1965 and especially the 1971 war. The project had generated a lot of interest upon announcement, especially after the release of its first-look poster, which showed Akshay in a powerful avatar inspired by the respected officer.
The film was also expected to be a special venture for the actor, as he took the initiative to present the war icon’s story to a wider audience. However, due to increasing delays and unresolved issues, the project remained in limbo for years before its official confirmation.
