The Delhi High Court on Wednesday kept an interim prohibitory verification, in which composer R Rahman and others were barred from using the song. ,Veera Raja Veera ‘ Mani Ratnam’s 2023 film Ponyin Selvan IIA division bench of Justice C Hari Shankar and Om Prakash Shukla passed the order after hearing Rehman’s appeal against the decision of a single judge. “We have allowed the appeal. We have written a concurrent opinion. We have separated the order imposed by the single judge on the principle,” the bench saw.

However, the judges clarified that they were not investigating the actual question of copyright violations at this stage.
Background of case
Controversy arose after classical singer and Padma Shri Awardee Ustad Fayaz Vasifuddin Dagar, filed a copyright suit against Rahman, Madras Talkies, Laika Productions and Tips Industries. Dagar alleged that Veera Raja Veera Was copied from Shiva stutiIn the 1970s, a classical composition created by his father Ustad Nasir Fayazuddin Dagar and uncle Ustuddin Dagar, known as Junior Dagar Brothers.

Allegations and defense

However, the defendants fiercely contested the allegations. Tips Industries further argued that copyright could not extend to the “methods of singing” or the style of rendering.
Current status
With the separation of interim prohibitory orders with the division bench, Rahman and the manufacturers are no longer stopping using ‘Veera Raja Veera ‘However, there is a big question whether the volume of the song for copyright violations is unresolved and is expected to be addressed in the latter proceedings.
