The Marvel cinematographic universe is preparing for its biggest chapter with Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to be released on December 18, 2026. The film will mark the start of the end for the Multative saga, but the absence of a star from the list of official actors triggered questions.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, was not included in the recent live announcement of 27 confirmed distribution members. It left the fans wondering if the Sorcerer Supreme had been cut off from the film. Speaking with Omelete (via updates Avengers on X), Cumberbatch responded with a fun comment: “Who knows? Maybe they didn’t have enough chairs.”
His remarks came after months of contradictory updates. At one point, the actor confirmed that he would appear in the film (then entitled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty), but later declared that the rewritings had moved his role to Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. He then reversed the course, saying to Business Insider: “I am in this one.” The revelation of the actors, however, did not include it.
Will Doctor Strange appear in Avengers: Doomsday?
Marvel fans wonder if Strange will play a role in Avengers: Doomsday or if his story is saved for the future. Given its central role in Doctor Strange in the MultiViverse of Madness and his post-key scene with Clea, it seems likely that Strange will have a certain involvement. His knowledge of incursions and the multiverse makes him an important character in the conclusion of the saga.
Marvel Studios and Robert Downey Jr. suggested that other surprises were planned, with the possibility of a second casting announcement before the film’s release. If it is true, Strange could always appear in the film, either in a smaller role, or in the post-key scene leading to secret wars.
The upcoming Marvel outings leading to Doomsday
Before Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters, Marvel Studios has several projects scheduled until 2025 and 2026:
Ironheart (June 24, 2025, Disney +): Riri Williams builds his own armor after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Fantastic Four: first steps (July 25, 2025, theaters): Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are like Marvel’s first family, facing Galactus.
Wakanda’s eyes (August 6, 2025, Disney +): An animated anthology exploring the history of Wakanda and the Missions of Warriors.
Marvel Zombies (October 3, 2025, Disney +): Widens the if if if …? Zombie episode in a six -part horror series.
Wonder Man (December 2025, Disney +): Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays in a satirical version of Hollywood renown.
Spider-Man: In New Day (July 25, 2026, theaters): Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, rebuilding his life after the house.
These projects will lead directly to Avengers: Doomsday, which is led by the Russo Brothers and presents Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The saga ends with Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
With Marvel balancing new heroes, X-Men cameo and major crossovers, fans may not know the full cast until the film reaches theaters. For the moment, the words of Benedict Cumberbatch suggest that Doctor Strange may not yet be out of the fight.
