Filmmaker and producer Vidya Vinod Chopra turned 73 today. In an old unpounted interview since 2003, he shared his views on mainstream Hindi cinema and more.

You look like a perennial outdoor in Bollywood
I am. Look at the cinema we are making! Tell me about Hindi films in the last ten years that we can be proud of. When I need to be proud of Indian cinema, I am Guru Dutt, V. I go back to Shantaram, K Asif, Bimal Roy and Early Raj Kapoor. Look at the nonsense we are doing these days! Even so -called crossover/multiplex cinema…. There is not a single film that I want to watch. I hope that many new filmmakers make films that I want to see.

No, I make great reservation about Devdas, although it is very close to me. I liked rentThis is the only film I liked in recent years. But listen, go back in time. You will see Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor and Bimal Roy with classics during the same year.
So, is Los Angeles your last destination as a filmmaker?
My last destination is to make great cinema. To an extent, I have already done so. I am not setting a distant goal for myself. During last year, I was focusing on my production Munnabhai MBBSI am very proud of this film. I want to make step 5 in Hollywood. This is the kind of subject that I cannot make it in Mumbai. What does money mean for you,
As a student of economics, I know that the correct value of money is only in its productive use. I am using my earnings, the kind of films I believe. I have never compromised in any of my films, 1942 ,Love story) Or Mission Kashmir,
But you did not have to restructure the role of Hrithik Roshan Mission Kashmir After becoming a star overnight?
I would not say a compromise. When Hrithik succeeded, I had to give him an introductory scene that would reveal the audience that the hero had arrived. I cast an actor. But he became a star with an image. And I had to do justice to his image. When i make Bear With Amitabh Bachchan, he comes to me with his image accessories. Even if I work with Dustin Hoffman in Hollywood, I have to keep his image in mind. I hate to compromise. Whether it is Sanjay Bhansali or Raju Hirani, I do not want anyone to compromise with me.
How do you rate yourself as a human being?
I have a great opinion of myself. I should tell you what happened to me in a recent talk show … During the conversation, a man went on camera for me. He looked familiar. When he said, “But I will die for this man”, I remembered how this man was being killed on a road after an accident. I picked him up and took him to the hospital.
