Bison (also marketed as Bison Kaalamaadan) is a Tamil-language sports drama starring Dhruva Vikram in the lead role. Directed by Mari Selvaraj, the film stars Pasupathi, Ameer, Lal, Anupama Parameswaran, Rajisha Vijayan and many others in pivotal roles.

If you are planning to watch the movie in theaters this week, here is the IHNS review for you.

plot

Bison revolves around the story of Kittan, an aspiring Kabaddi player from Vanathi village. As he grapples with the hate politics in his village, Kittan faces significant challenges in achieving his dreams due to his background and personal difficulties.

Whether he ultimately achieves his dream – and what adversities he must overcome along the way – forms the core of this narrative.

Good

Exploring complex socio-political dynamics and sensitive themes, Bison is clearly in line with Mari Selvaraj’s distinctive storytelling style. The film does not shy away from shedding light on complex issues affecting marginalized communities, topics that are often ignored through the prism of privilege.

While Bison may not be as powerful as Selvaraj’s Karnan or Vaazhai, the Dhruva Vikram-starrer is still a tough, emotionally resonant sports drama. With a compelling performance from the great actor, the film effectively establishes a strong emotional connect.

Although the first half struggles to maintain momentum, the second half picks up the film considerably by taking a more in-depth look at the challenges facing the community.

Selvaraj’s directorial style shines in every frame, continuing the thematic use of animals as metaphors. Just as a dog in Pariyaram Perumal symbolized a deeper meaning, and a donkey and a horse in Karnan, Bison uses its titular animal as a symbolic element.

The writing is top-notch at several points, and the relationships between the characters are well-developed and meaningful, especially how they impact Kitten’s journey.

On the technical front, Bison features stunning cinematography by Ezil Arasu, who captures the on-location scenes with cinematic flair. With sharp editing by Sakthi Thiru, the film remains engaging despite its relatively long running time.

bad

The Bison is undoubtedly a compelling watch, but it also has its flaws. While dealing with a sensitive subject, the film sometimes loses direction. In particular, the first half struggles to maintain momentum as it juggles multiple subplots, which detracts from the cohesiveness of the main narrative.

Its non-linear structure, balancing past and present, seems ambitious but does not always succeed in conveying its message clearly. Additionally, the music and background score feel weak and, at times, diminishes the impact of an otherwise powerful film.

Display

Dhruv Vikram has given an excellent performance as Kitten. Balancing anger with composure, he shows great promise as a versatile actor capable of handling complex roles.

While Dhruva presents the emotional core of the film, it is Pasupathi who stands as a supporting pillar. The veteran actor’s compelling screen presence and powerful moments elevate the story and create strong chemistry with Dhruv’s character.

Rajisha Vijayan as Kittan’s sister Raji brings life to the film, while Anupama Parameswaran deserves a special mention. Despite her limited screen time as Kitten’s love interest Rani, she does exactly what the role demands and leaves an impression.

Decision

Although Bison may not reach the heights of Karnan or Mamanan, it is an impressive work from director Mari Selvaraj. Its socially relevant story resonates even in today’s world, making it a compelling and thought-provoking watch.

If you’re interested in a movie that blends social commentary and sports drama together, Bison is definitely worth seeing on the big screen.
