Former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer Sameer Wankhede has filed a defamation suit against Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment over Bollywood villain Aryan Khan’s directorial debut. The show, which premiered on the streaming platform last month, has sparked controversy after viewers saw a character resembling Wankhede – the officer who famously arrested Aryan during the cruise drug bust in 2021. Following Wankhede’s petition, Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to both Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment.
Bollywood scoundrels: Delhi High Court issues notice to producers on Sameer Wankhede’s plea against Aryan Khan and his web-series
The court had earlier rejected his initial plea as “not maintainable”, but after he submitted a revised version, the case was taken up for hearing. “We appreciate that there is a reason on your part for approaching this court, but there is a procedure to be followed,” the court said, Hindustan Times reported. Representing Wankhede, senior advocate Sandeep Sethi told the bench that his client and his family have been subjected to continuous online abuse since the release of the show. Sethi said, “In the context of the series, there are posts trolling me, my wife and my sister. Prima facie it is offensive. It is shocking. They (the defendants) are certainly not defending those posts.”
The Ba**ads of Bollywood, produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment and directed by Aryan Khan, has been described as a satire on the Hindi film industry. The show features a “plain-clothed policeman” who raids a Bollywood party and takes an actor into custody despite finding no drugs – a story that many social media users have linked to the real-life 2021 incident involving Aryan Khan’s arrest. In his suit, Wankhede alleged that the series was “deliberately designed and executed” to tarnish his image and portray him in a “colourful and prejudicial manner”.
The controversy comes as The Ba**ads of Bollywood is Aryan Khan’s first major project in the entertainment industry, adding another layer of public scrutiny to the young filmmaker’s debut film.
With the court now issuing notices to both the streaming platform and the production house, the case is set to reignite the debate around artistic expression, real-life inspiration and the thin line between satire and defamation.
