Veteran actor and filmmaker Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, passed away in Mumbai on October 20 after a prolonged illness. He was 84 years old. With the demise of Asrani, remembered for his impeccable comic timing and career spanning over five decades, the Indian film industry is mourning the loss of a true legend.
Boman Irani pays emotional tribute to late actor Asrani: “His commitment to the camera will always stay with me”
Among those to pay tribute was actor Boman Irani, who shared a heartfelt note on social media about his recent experience of working with the late actor. Recalling their time together, Irani revealed that they had worked together just ten days before Asrani’s demise.
In her post, Irani wrote, “About ten days ago, I had the privilege of working with Asrani ji for the first time. For the shot, I had to be injured and on the floor. He, the doctor, had to run and help me. While he needed a little help walking in the dark on a crowded set, the magical word ‘action’ had another meaning for him.”
The actor described how Asrani, despite his poor health, transformed into a burst of energy as soon as the camera was on. “Like an electrified wire, he burst into the room and effortlessly got down on hands and knees on the floor, stretching rapidly toward me. At the ‘cut’, he needed a little help off the floor. But his commitment to the roving camera will always stay with me.”
Irani concluded his note with a poignant comment about Asrani’s lifelong dedication to his art: “Until the end, there was nothing in the world he had to do. He would do nothing more than respond to ‘action’ in his place and do what would make him and others happy.”
Known for his memorable roles in classics such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, today’s latest news, And Amar Akbar Anthony, Asrani leaves behind a rich cinematic legacy.
