Amazon Prime Video show Matka King, starring Vijay Varma in the lead role, is all set to start streaming from tomorrow. For those unaware, Kalyanji started the Matka gambling game in Mumbai in the 1960s. They started as a spice trade in the 1940s.
Tanuja had first raised her objection in 2023, urging the creators to stop production or consult the family for accuracy. When their concerns were not addressed, they issued a cease-and-desist notice in April 2024.
Subsequently, he formally filed a petition in the Bombay High Court in 2025, seeking an injunction on the series. Their petition reportedly demands the makers to stop production, remove promotional materials and stop the release of the show altogether.
According to the latest developments, the hearing of this case took place yesterday on April 15 in the Bombay High Court. According to a report by Legal Era Online, after hearing both the sides, the bench refused to stay the release of the web series. The case has now been adjourned till April 20.
In a video statement shared by Tanuja Bhagat last May, she had said, “Amazon Prime is misleading the public by its upcoming web series Matka King. They are commercializing by stealing the identity of my grandfather, who is still known as the ‘Matka King’. They are erasing the truth. The person who started the Matka game was my grandfather Kalyanji Gangadhar Bhagat. It was my grandfather who originally started the Matka game. My grandfather was also given the title ‘Matka King’ by Amazon as well as the upcoming web series based on Worli Matka, who is none other than my grandfather.
