Dhurandhar: The Revenge is now nearing the end of its theatrical run. The Ranveer Singh starrer has earned US$43.36 million (Rs 407 crore) so far and is likely to close at around US$44 million. In doing so, it will be the third highest-grossing Bollywood film overseas, excluding China, behind Jaawaan (US$48.17 million) and Pathan (US$47.66 million). However, when one looks at the numbers, it is clear that the film is much higher than both of them.
Dhurandhar: The Revenge did not release in the Middle East, one of the major overseas markets for the Hindi film industry. It also didn’t release in Bangladesh, but that’s a minor loss. In a similar comparison excluding the Middle East, Bangladesh and Japan (where Dhurandhar may release later), Pathan and Jawan fell to US$33.22 million and US$28.87 million respectively, which is about US$10–15 million less than Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Alternatively, if Dhurandhar: The Revenge had been released in the Middle East, it would have earned an additional US$10–15 million, possibly more, bringing its total to US$55–60 million, placing it well above Pathan and Jawan.
The film’s dominance is even more pronounced in major overseas markets such as the United States, Canada and Australia, where it grossed 1.5–2 times that of Pathan and Jaawaan. It is also a record grossing film with low margins in markets like the United Kingdom and Germany. These five, apart from the Middle East (and New Zealand), form the core of the overseas market for the Hindi film industry, and it is here that Dhurandhar: The Revenge has performed like its best film to date. Even in smaller markets, in some it is ahead of Jawan and Pathan, while in others it is far behind. Some of these markets are exclusive to SRK, like Morocco, Egypt etc., where normally Bollywood films are not even released.
