Dhurandhar 2 is all set for a grand theatrical release on March 19, and the makers are leaving no stone unturned to ramp up the film. IHNS has exclusively learned that the team is planning an aggressive box-office launch, with paid preview shows scheduled to begin at 5PM ET on March 18 in India.
As reported earlier today, progress for the film will begin tomorrow after its trailer launch. The much-awaited trailer of Dhurandhar 2 is scheduled to release tomorrow at 11:01 pm, and ticket bookings for paid previews are expected to go live soon after the trailer premiere.
Industry insiders say the strategy is aimed at taking advantage of the huge buzz surrounding the sequel. Ever since Dhurandhar was released, with the teaser of “To be continued” and the sequel finally coming out, the sequel has been highly anticipated and has since become one of the most, if not the most, awaited films in recent memory.
Previewing a film serves several purposes. With Thursday being a national holiday for Eid, it is appropriate to preview it on the eve of a day before. The film is coming with a long running time of around four hours, which will limit the number of screenings on the day of release. Having previews helps with this too, and more shows are offered for the opening day. There will be some theaters where films will be running 24 hours from 5 pm on Wednesday till the next day.
There was a period in the late 2000s and early 2010s when paid previews started becoming a regular feature for Bollywood releases. However, the trend gradually petered out, as previews were often seen as taking away from the opening day’s figures, with industry reporting largely focused on first-day collections. Recently, with the “all-India” fixation of box office reporting, opening day figures are being reported including previews, leading to a revival of this practice.
Stree 2 holds the record for the biggest preview of a Bollywood film. It will be expected that Dhurandhar 2 will run smoothly on this. It remains to be seen how extensive these previews will be, and depending on that, the film could register one of the biggest previews for any Indian film, in a space currently dominated by Telugu releases, which have been getting very wide previews since last year.
