The controversy over the upcoming Netflix film Ghooskhor Pandat, produced by Neeraj Pandey and starring Manoj Bajpayee, became more intense this week, with the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) formally objecting to its title and urging the producers to withdraw it, while also warning of significant industry action if the demands are not met.
FWICE demands withdrawal of bribery pundit title, warns of strict action
Controversy began soon after the film’s announcement and teaser release, with many audiences and various organizations criticizing the title. Infiltrator Pandit Offensive and potentially offensive towards a specific community. The title combines Ghooshkhor – a colloquial Hindi word for a person who takes bribes – with Pandit, who is usually associated with the Brahmin community. Critics argued that this association could perpetuate stereotypes and hurt sentiments.
FWICE’s objection and warning
FWICE, which represents workers, technicians and artistes in over three dozen affiliated unions, sent a letter to producers’ bodies and major OTT platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Zee5 and SonyLIV. According to a PTI report, the organization said: “FWICE and all its affiliated organizations strongly object to the use of this title, as it appears to target a particular community and its traditional means of livelihood in a derogatory and offensive manner.”
“Such titles are likely to hurt sentiments, create misunderstandings and disturb social harmony… We therefore appeal to all producing bodies to refrain from allowing the registration or continuation of such film titles which are provocative in nature and capable of creating unrest among Indians,” the letter said. The federation stressed that the film industry, as a platform of influence, has a responsibility to avoid promoting disrespect or division.
FWICE also warned that if the title was not withdrawn immediately, it may advise its associations and members to distance themselves from any project involving the film’s production house. This could mean a boycott of technicians and crew working on future films by the same producers.
Government, legal and public reaction on bribery pundit
The controversy reached the legal and political arena. In Lucknow, an FIR was filed against the makers of the film on charges of hurting caste sentiments, and a writ petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court, seeking to stay the release of the film on the grounds that the title is “communally derogatory”.
Political organizations and leaders have also joined the criticism. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) termed the title as “offensive” and urged for appropriate action against the film. Amid the backlash, executives reportedly directed Netflix India to remove the teaser and related promotional materials from official channels.
Responding to the uproar, Neeraj Pandey issued a statement acknowledging that the title had “hurt” some viewers and announced that all promotional material for the project would be removed for the time being. He clarified: “Our film is a fictional police drama… The word ‘Pandat’ is used only as a colloquial name for a character. The story focuses on the actions and choices of an individual and does not comment on or represent any caste, religion or community.”
Manoj Bajpayee also addressed the controversy on his official social media, writing: “I respect the sentiments and concerns shared by people, and I take them seriously… For me, it was about portraying a flawed man and his journey of self-realization. It was not meant to make a statement about any community.”
Beyond FWICE, the Film Makers Combine (FMC) – another industry body – has objected to the title on procedural grounds, noting that Infiltrator Pandit Was not formally approved under standard title registration procedures. The organization has cautioned the production and Netflix against using the unauthorized title.
