When it was being made I was told, ‘who will see thisEarlier it was one rupee. 10 crore budget film. It was difficult to raise this much money in India. When we spent Rs. The project became commercially viable in France and Germany at a cost of Rs 5.50 crore. I was able to recover the remaining Rs. 4.50 crores via MG within 48 hours of Cannes premiere! The India rights were yet to be sold, but its collection was going to be a bonus.
He revealed, “I contacted Karan. He was also in Cannes for the premiere Bombay Talkies (2013). I saw him eating food. I introduced myself; This was my first meeting with him. I told him, ‘You are a master of love stories and I think I have created a beautiful love story. It’s broken here in Cannes. We have sold the rights to the world. Would you please look at it?’ This is how our friendship started. He gave me his number and asked me to show the film in India.
Guneet further said, “Once I returned to India, his film Crazy youthfulness (2013) had been released. A week later, he saw the film and liked it very much. He went out and gave us the tagline of the film – Can you love someone you’ve never met? Then he called me into his office and asked me, ‘What do you want?’ I said, ‘A big release. We have released 100 screens and we can do this. I want a release in more than 500 screens.

It was still a film which had no songs, dialogues in English etc.”Who will come and see? It was valid even then. However, I think we overestimate our audience.”
At another point in the interview, Guneet also revealed how she raised money from France, “I realized that there was a treaty between India and France, which was signed in 1985. I was the first to use the treaty for a co-production in 2011-12. That’s how I raised 50% of the budget from France (smiles).
