Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has revealed about his upcoming project. cataclysmStarring Ranveer Singh. The film, which is generating a lot of curiosity, is set to explore a post-apocalyptic world on a large scale – an idea that, according to Mehta, has been in development for quite some time.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the genesis of the project, Mehta revealed that the concept was initially developed by filmmaker Jai Mehta, who was working on it independently before Ranveer Singh came on board. “Jay had been working on this idea for a long time.” He further explained how the collaboration took shape after Ranveer showed interest in the concept, “When Ranveer saw their work, he reached out to them and then Jai proposed it to him. Once Ranveer said he liked the idea, we invested in developing it—helping Jai create the world he wanted to present in the film.”
Description of the scale and ambition of cataclysmMehta described it as a genre-defining project for Indian cinema. “This is a post-apocalyptic world that has not been attempted before on this scale in India. Development is not just about writing. It also involves ideas – how you shape them, how you imagine them, and ultimately how you sell them to a third party, a star or a studio. We have invested in creating those ideas,” he further told the portal.
Addressing speculations that the film was inspired by existing literary works, Mehta strongly rejected such claims, and clarified that the story is completely original. He added, “This is not a conversion.”
He also stressed that the film’s success would largely depend on how convincingly its world was brought to life on screen. He shared, “The success of Jai’s film will depend on its comprehensive nature”. “How do you make a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world believable? To do that, we’re working with some of the best talent from around the world. And we’re trying to achieve it at a fraction of the cost that Hollywood would have done it.”
With its ambitious premise and focus on deep storytelling, cataclysm It is going to be a significant contribution to the emerging landscape of high-concept cinema in India.
