In a major development ahead of its theatrical release, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has rejected a plea by Siddika Begum, who claims to be Shah Bano’s daughter, seeking to stay the release of the film. Siddika Begum had approached the court seeking a ban on the release and promotional activities of the film, arguing that Right It is drawn directly from the life and personal experiences of his late mother, Shah Bano, whose landmark 1985 Supreme Court case reshaped Indian legal and social discourse. According to Siddiqa, the film violates the family’s privacy and misuses personal details under the guise of creative freedom.
Legal team representing RightHowever, the claims were strongly denied. He clarified that the film is not a biographical story but is inspired by the famous Supreme Court judgment in the Mohammed Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum case. The team further said that the story is taken from Jigna Vora’s published novel ‘Bano, Bharat Ki Beti’, and focuses more on the court proceedings without making any reference to individual family matters.
The High Court seems to have taken these arguments into consideration, as it has refused to impose any restrictions on the film, allowing its release to go ahead as scheduled.
This controversy was earlier addressed by Emraan Hashmi in an exclusive interview IHNSWhere he expressed the team’s awareness of the sensitivity of the issue. “All I can say is that I think we have been very sensitive to the overall issue. We are not passing any judgment on this matter in this film or pointing fingers at any particular thing. We have taken out a few things inspired by that case. We have been very sensitive in the way we have captured it in the film. Again, it is a sensitive thing, so I can’t really go beyond that,” he had said.
