Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra is currently successfully presents himself in theaters and was hailed by criticism. Directed by Dominic Arun, the Kalyani Priyadarshan Starrer is a dark fantastic superhero film produced by the Wayfarer films by Dulquer Salmaan.
Sharing his trip behind the film, the director Dominic Arun spoke with IHNS future payments, even confirming the rest with Tovino Thomas and a possible collaboration with Mammootty.
Interview with Dominic Arun
1. Your first film, Tharangam, was a story that emphasized innovation in narration. Coming to Lokah, you have carved out a whole universe from Kerala folklore. How did he materialize from zero?
Years. I have never deliberately chosen to follow a specific style. I am a kind of filmmaker who wants to do something that I really like. These stories naturally come to me according to my personal experiences.
Whether Tharangam or Lokah, I never thought: “I want to do something deliberately”. I just instinctively want to tell my stories like this. I have never studied scriptwriting, and I haven’t read many stories either, but I just wanted to tell one.
2. Adapting the essence of fantasy and mixing it with realism is a feat from a writing point of view. How do you view the future of the characters who have been introduced to Lokah?
Years. Each character who entered Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra has a specific objective. Even for Chandra, there is a more important goal in the universe. She will not be limited to this film, and she will continue to be an important character in the future.
For the moment, we have only given a brief overview of her, but in the situation as a whole, all these characters have much more to contribute. Even the cameos have stories; We have not included them only for good, but I cannot yet reveal more details on this subject.
3. From a technical point of view, Lokah is a perfect example of how technology can be used to create amazing visuals. That being said, how did you manage to achieve it with an RS 30 budget is drunk?
Years. For about 1.5 to 2 years, we have spent time in pre-production works. During this phase itself, we identified where we had to spend more and where we could be more limited.
From the start, our team had detailed discussions. Everything was well planned and, therefore, our reflection process was to use technology to the best. I believe that having this time for preparation work has made it possible to reach this quality on our budget.
4. We already know how Lokah: Chapter 1 is only the tip of the iceberg. As the rest is presented to be with the character of Tovino Thomas Chaathan, will it be a bigger story?
Years. At the end of the film, we say that “the Chaathans will arrive” and the second episode will be a solo company with Tovino Thomas as head. Although we focus on the story of Chaathan, there is a bigger goal behind everything.
The whole cinematic universe leads to a certain conclusion, and the film immediately on the Chaathan will explore more, acting as the next step towards it.
5. Now, Lokah has been released in theaters for Onam and had a box office confrontation with Hridayapoorvam from Mohanlal. What do you think of this scenario?
Years. I never believed that there was a kind of competition. When we decided to release the film in theaters during Onam, we only saw it as a time when many people come together to watch a film in theaters.
For each film released, there is room so that it flourishes; This is what me and the production team think. I just think there was magic for us who drew everyone’s attention.
6. To date, many people know that Mammootty plays the role of Moothon. How did he say yes to this role and how did you integrate such a superstar into the universe?
Years. When we first started to discuss the story itself, we already knew that there would be a character like Moothon. When we discuss it with Dulquer Salmaan, we expressed our wish that Mammukka could play the role.
Just before the start of filming, Mammukka asked us to tell the story. We went to him, told him and finally told him that we wanted him like Moothon. He said, “You are going to finish your work first, we will think about it.
After the shooting, DQ and Mammukka saw the first cup and liked it. It was then that we asked Mammukka again to play the role, and he agreed to double for the character.
I believe that Mammootty Sir still needs much more convincing if he wants to continue playing Moothon in future films.
7. Finally, can we never see the character of Moothon freeing his full potential in the next films?
Years. Yes, in future films. Not the next one, but on the whole line, we can see it in its full potential. Moothon is like the main character of the universe, and like everyone else, I also hope that it will happen with Mammumukka.
