Decades after Tobey Maguire first donned the iconic Spider-Man suit in Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man, fans can see the actor return as Peter Parker. Hollywood screenwriter Mattson Tomlin recently shared hints that he is interested in writing Spider-Man 4, which would feature Maguire’s version of the superhero.
The Batman: Part II co-writer Tomlin sparked excitement on social media after answering a fan’s question on X (formerly Twitter). He said, “To be honest, my main interest in that regard right now would be writing Spider-Man 4, where Toby’s Spider-Man is struggling between being a husband and a father.”
The author explained his attraction to the idea of an older and more mature Peter Parker. He said, “As a father, Spider-Man is where I’ve gravitated towards over the last eight movies.” The post has raised expectations among fans who want to see Maguire reprise his role in a standalone film, especially after his appearance alongside Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). That film brought together three generations of Peter Parkers from different universes, creating one of Marvel’s greatest cinematic moments.
When recently asked if there had been “any movement” on a potential Spider-Man 4, Tomlin gave a cryptic but optimistic answer: “Slow and steady wins the race… For a long time (if ever!) there won’t be anything to say about it because there’s a lot of people and politics involved and things going on right that have nothing to do with me, but I haven’t got a ‘no’ yet!”
As of now, there has been no official confirmation from Tobey Maguire or the studio. However, the comments have kept fan speculation alive about a possible continuation of Raimi’s beloved trilogy or a new story in the Spider-Man multiverse.
Tom Holland’s upcoming Spider-Man and the Multiverse
Meanwhile, Tom Holland is set to return as Spider-Man in the MCU’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is scheduled to release on July 31, 2026. Zendaya will also appear in the film, which Holland described as a “fresh start” for his Peter Parker after the events of No Way Home.
Tomlin’s other major project, The Batman: Part II starring Robert Pattinson, is scheduled for release in October 2027. With these projects moving forward, fans continue to speculate about the possibility of Tobey Maguire returning to the Spider-Man suit, potentially exploring a more mature Peter Parker while balancing family and hero duties.
