US President Donald Trump has triggered the debate with his latest announcement in the global entertainment industry – a plan to impose 100 percent tariff on films produced outside the United States. The announcement, his social media platform Truth, through a post on social, attracted sharp reactions from filmmakers around the world including Indian director Kabir Khan.

Trump argued that international presentations have reduced the US film industry, writing, “California, with its weak and disabled governor, has been a particularly difficult hit! Therefore, to solve this long -ending problem, I will put 100 percent tariffs on any and all films that are made outside the United States.” He further claimed that foreign countries “stolen” “stolen” from the US, “stolen” compared to a child.
Responding to the comments, Kabir Khan questioned both the viability and clarity of the proposal. Talking to NDTV, he said, “I don’t know what he means when he says ‘made outside the United States’ because every other Hollywood film is shot outside the United States, VFX is executed outside the USA. And what is tariff? What is the ticket price? The ticket is very widespread to explain his statement? First, do they remember what he remembers yesterday.
Filmmaker’s comments highlight the concerns in the industry about implementing such a policy, especially given Hollywood’s huge dependence on international shooting places, post-production hubs and talent pools.
