Speaking at the Netflix What Next event held in Mumbai on Tuesday evening, comedian-actor Kapil Sharma made an unexpected comment about the gangsters targeting him, touching upon a sensitive topic following the attacks on his overseas business.

Kapil was on stage with Monica Shergill, vice president of content, Netflix India, and was celebrating his long association with the streaming platform. As part of the conversation, Monica praised his work and joked about how audiences across India had their eyes on him for a long time, quipping, “Our eyes, India’s eyes have been on you for a long time, Kapil. Hopefully, the police of 11 countries should not be watching.”
In response, Kapil made a cheeky comment that raised a few eyebrows: “Ek do mulko ke gangster bhi lage hai aaj kal.”
Many in the audience interpreted the comment as an indirect reference to Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang, whose associates are allegedly linked to several attacks on Kapil’s Canada-based restaurant, Cups Café in Surrey, British Columbia.
Realizing the sensitivity of his comment – and that the program was being telecast live – Kapil laughed and asked the videographers present to cut that segment from the recording, before he noticed that the cameras were still running.
Cups Café, which Kapil opened with his wife Ginni Chatrath in 2025, has been hit by gunfire three times in four months in July, August and October last year, causing damage to property but no injuries. Associates allegedly associated with the Bishnoi network, including Goldie Dhillon and Kuldeep Sidhu, have claimed responsibility for the attacks on social media and issued a warning to the general public to stay away from the location.
Kapil’s previous comments on firing incidents also highlighted his perspective on the local policing environment.
