The Delhi High Court on Monday heard explosive claims that the will of late Sona BLW Automotive Group industrialist Sanjay Kapoor was digitally created to bequeath his Rs 30,000 crore estate entirely to his third wife Priya Kapoor. What started as a private inheritance dispute has turned into a courtroom thriller, with lawyers for Kapoor’s children from his second marriage – Samaira and Kiaan Kapoor, whose mother is Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor – alleging deliberate digital manipulation of files, secret WhatsApp groups and forged signature trails. The outcome could redefine not only the balance of a family’s fortune but also the boundaries of digital evidence in India’s inheritance law.
Karisma Kapoor’s kids’ shocking allegations on Sanjay Kapoor’s will: Metadata, WhatsApp chats and more!
“A will is born on another man’s computer”
Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing both the children, told the bench that the disputed will was “not the product of the hand or mind of the deceased” but was a “constructed document” that was created and edited on another person’s computer. According to Jethmalani, the metadata shows that the will was prepared on the device of one Nitin Sharma, who has no formal relation to Sanjay Kapoor. “Who prepared this will?” he asked. “The file was created and changed on Sharma’s system on March 17, 2025 – the same day when Sanjay was in Goa with his son Kiyan. It defies logic that he would rewrite his will while on vacation, disinheriting his children.”
The lawyer said the Word file was converted into a PDF at 10:06 am on March 24, hours before a WhatsApp group named Family Office IC was created to circulate it among a select circle, which included Sharma, Priya Kapoor and Dinesh Agarwal, director of Aureus Investments Pvt Ltd, part of Sona BLW Promoter Group.
Jethmalani said, “Soon after the document was shared, Priya Kapoor replied, ‘Okay, thanks!’ -Without any surprise or hesitation. It is like an acknowledgment of the completion of a task, with no endorsement from the deceased.”
Digital Footprint and Missing Links
Jethmalani argued that electronic evidence showed multiple, unknown edits before and after Kapoor’s death, pointing to “a covert and coordinated effort”. The will came to light only on the 13th day after the cremation of the deceased, he said. “There is no explanation as to where this document was stored or who had possession of it,” he said. “The entire chain of custody has been broken.”
Contradictions and omissions
Jethmalani told the court that there were apparent internal contradictions in the will – one section listed three bank accounts and another six, while major assets including Kapoor’s New York apartment, a 2010 family trust and stakes in jewellery, artwork and precious metals were left out. “These are not clerical errors,” he said. “A Harvard-educated industrialist like Sanjay Kapoor could not have prepared such a document.”
Even more shocking, he said, were Samaira and Kiyan’s wrong addresses and five inconsistent spellings of their youngest son Azarias’ name. He said, “A careful and loving father would never make such mistakes.”
“A will stands in the air”
Jethmalani also drew attention to the absence of a schedule of property, which is a mandatory contract detailing the testator’s share. The bench itself described this omission as “a serious procedural lapse”.
“Without it,” Jethmalani said, “this will is up in the air. It contains no list of the deceased’s ownership, and even the named executor appears to be unaware of the scale of the estate.”
character and credibility issue
To strengthen his case, Jethmalani portrayed Sanjay Kapoor as “a devoted father and a perfectionist in both business and life”, citing his education at the University of Buckingham and Harvard Business School. “He never missed Kiyan’s birthday,” she said. “The idea that a man like that would throw his children out is beyond belief.” Concluding his arguments, Jethmalani declared: “This will should be thrown into the dustbin of history. It bears no trace of the hand or heart of the deceased.”
Court’s response and adjournment
The High Court said the evidence raised “substantial questions” about the origin and internal consistency of the will. The case was adjourned to Tuesday, October 14 for further investigation of the digital trail and custody of the physical document.
Priya Kapoor’s lawyer says “infallible electronic evidence” supports the authenticity of the will. But for Samaira and Kiyan, the fight has become a broader test of truth – pitting memory against metadata in the battle for India’s most watched legacy.
