The Madras High Court has stepped into a recent legal battle, including the property of late Bollywood icon Sridevi at East Coast Road (ECR) in Chennai, directing Tambaram Tehsildar to take a clear decision within four weeks. The case was brought forward by filmmaker Boney Kapoor, who has accused three persons of cheating to buy his wife back in 1988.

Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, who presided over the case, issued a directive after hearing the plea of Kapoor to cancel the legal successor certificate received by the claimants in 2005. According to Kapoor, the document was wrongly issued in his favor and is now being used to claim rights over Sridevi’s farmhouse property.
The competition has deep roots of the land, which looks back at its original owner, MC Samanda Mudaliar. His family divided the property between three sons and two daughters in 1960 through a mutual system. Relying on this system, Sridevi bought a law to land on April 19, 1988 through a registered deed. Since then, the actor and his family had complete possession and use of property, which served as a farmhouse retreat.
The trouble came to light after years when three persons claimed one of Mudaliar’s sons, the second wife and children – began to claim inheritance rights. To support his claims, he obtained a legal successor certificate from Taramaram Tehsildar in 2005.
However, Kapoor has strongly contested the validity of his claims on several grounds. His petition argued that the Tehsildar had no jurisdiction to issue such a certificate, as the original landswami was a resident of Mylapur. Even more importantly, he said that the so -called second marriage was not legally valid, making the trio disqualified as legal heirs under the Hindu Succession Act.
While presenting all the necessary evidence to demonstrate that the purchase was real and duly registered, Kapoor urged the court to recognize the certificate as a fraud. After considering both sides, Justice Venkatesh directed Taramaram Tehsildar to fully investigate the matter and give a decisive decision within a period of four weeks.
As the battle comes out, the controversy has not only attracted attention due to legal complications, but also due to emotional weight that it is on the legacy of one of the most beloved stars of Indian cinema, whose untimely passing in 2018 is still echoing with millions of fans.
