Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, best known for his iconic role of Karna in BR Chopra’s epic television series Mahabharata, passed away on October 15, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. He was 68 years old. His team released a heartfelt statement announcing his passing:

“With deep sorrow and deep sorrow, we inform you of the demise of Shri Pankaj Dhir ji, former Chairman of our Trust and former Honorable General Secretary of CINTAA, on 15th October 2025. His last rites will be performed today at 4:30 pm next to Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (West), Mumbai.”
One of the most complex and tragic characters of the Mahabharata, Karna played by Pankaj Dheer remains in the hearts of millions of people. In a previous interview with Lehren, Dheer had reflected on the importance of the role and the immense love it has received over the decades.
He shared: “The Mahabharata is a beautifully written treatise addressing all kinds of human relationships and moral lessons. When we created the show, we did not have many references for the character of Karna. I had to use my intelligence and creativity to shape how Karna would walk, talk and carry himself. I played the role of Karna with great restraint to generate empathy, while balancing the dramatic performances around him. “Decided to follow through.”
Dheer also expressed gratitude for his fans’ enduring association with Karna, recalling that his image as Karna also appears in school history books and is worshiped in temples dedicated to Karna in places like Karnal and Bastar. He said, “People have loved me wholeheartedly. This acceptance makes it difficult for others to play this role. I was offered the role of Karna in other adaptations, but I refused. For me, playing Karna was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.”
