King of Pop Michael Jackson’s biopic Michael has taken the box office by storm with its historic debut. The film grossed over US$217.4 million at the worldwide box office during its 5-day opening weekend. Of this, the musical biopic grossed over US$97 million in its domestic markets, while US$120.4 million came from international territories.
With such an impressive start, Michael emerged as the biggest opener for a biopic film at the box office, both domestically and internationally. This surpassed the previous record holders, Oppenheimer’s US$180.4 million and Bohemian Rhapsody’s US$141.7 million. That said, the Jafar Jackson-starrer also became the first film of its genre to score a double century globally.

Michael performed best in its home markets, followed by the United Kingdom, where it earned approximately US$15.6 million. It grossed over US$10.2 million in France. Mexico received US$9.7 million, followed by Brazil at US$8.2 million, Italy at US$8.1 million, Germany at US$7.2 million, Spain at US$6.8 million, Australia at US$6.6 million and China at US$4.8 million.
Interestingly, despite negative reviews from critics, the film recorded a great weekend. It’s a testament to the pop icon’s immense superstardom and cult fan following that persists year after year. Made at a cost of around US$200 million, the musical biopic is expected to gain popularity and end its theatrical run on a big note.
