The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) has issued a strong statement expressing “deep concern” over the proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Netflix, calling the development a potential blow to India’s theatrical landscape. The industry body, which represents multiplex chains across the country, cautioned that the merger could disrupt the supply of major studio films to theaters – a key driver for viewership, revenue and industry stability.

On December 5, Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery announced a historic agreement at an enterprise value of $82.7 billion, one of the largest entertainment mergers to date. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026 following the separation of WBD’s Global Networks division, which will bring Warner Bros.’ The famous film studio, HBO and HBO Max, under the umbrella of Netflix. While Netflix has said it will retain Warner Bros. Theatrical operations, MAI believes streaming platforms’ historic approach to cinema releases raises red flags.

MAI President Kamal Gyanchandani underlined the seriousness of the situation in a detailed statement. He said, “The Indian theatrical market thrives on choice, scale and cultural diversity. Warner Bros. has historically been a key partner to Indian cinemas, consistently contributing to our release calendar with successful global and local titles.”

Highlighting the broader economic footprint of cinemas, Gyanchandani said, “Cinemas in India are much more than entertainment venues. They are cultural centers and significant economic contributors. They support millions of livelihoods across production, distribution, exhibition, F&B and supporting services.”

MAI stressed that Netflix’s long-standing preference for limited theatrical releases could seriously impact the flow of studio content into theaters. “Netflix has consistently made it clear through its limited and highly restrictive approach to theatrical releases that it does not believe in a cinema-first model,” the statement said.

“If this acquisition goes ahead, the risks are two-fold – a meaningful reduction in high-quality content for theaters, and the possibility of smaller or non-existent theatrical windows. This will inevitably impact revenues, limit consumer choice and undermine the broader ecosystem of film production, distribution and exhibition in India,” warned Gianchandani.

The association further said that an integration of this scale “requires careful examination”, adding that it will continue to present its concerns to regulatory authorities in India and abroad.

As the debate over the Netflix-Warner Bros. deal continues around the world, MAI’s tough stance highlights the growing tension between streaming-first strategies and the traditional theatrical business – a conflict that could reshape the way audiences in India experience global cinema in the years to come.
