speculations all around Kalki 2898 AD The sequels continue after Deepika Padukone exits the franchise. While reports linking Alia Bhatt and Sai Pallavi to the project are doing the rounds on social media and trade circles, now director Nag Ashwin has shared an important update on the matter.
Nag Ashwin breaks silence on rumors of Alia Bhatt, Sai Pallavi joining Kalki, 2898 AD sequel: “Everything is speculation”
The discussion started months after production house Vyjayanthi Movies officially announced that it would not be continuing its collaboration with Deepika Padukone for the sequel. The statement drew attention in terms of lack of alignment, with the banner saying it was “unable to find a partnership” and suggesting that a film Kalki’s Scale requires a high level of commitment.
Soon after, speculations surfaced regarding the future of Deepika’s character Sumathi in the film. Since sumati plays an important role in Kalki universe, many fans questioned whether the character would be recast or written out entirely.
Addressing the issue during a conversation with Great Andhra, Nag Ashwin confirmed that Sumathi will continue to be an integral part of the story. “We need to announce who will play Sumathi Kalki 2. So far everything is just speculation. The character will definitely be there which we cannot remove because it is a very important character,” the filmmaker said.
Their statement effectively confirms that the role will remain in the sequel, while also clarifying that no official casting announcement has been made yet.
The uncertainty has given rise to two major theories among fans. A section believes that Alia Bhatt may join the franchise in a completely new role instead of replacing Deepika. Reports and online discussions have suggested that she may play the character of Goddess Vaishno Devi, who is often associated with Kalki mythology and according to some traditions is considered the Chiranjeevi who is tasked with guiding and protecting Kalki.
Another theory directly links both Alia Bhatt and Sai Pallavi to the role of Sumathi. Since the character serves as Kalki’s mother and is central to the story, many reports have speculated that the makers may opt for a straight-up remake.
However, Nag Ashwin’s latest comments indicate that all such reports are unconfirmed at this stage.
Original Kalki 2898 AD It starred Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Disha Patani in lead roles. The film emerged as one of the biggest Indian blockbusters and laid the foundation for a larger cinematic universe, making every casting development surrounding the sequel a subject of intense interest.
For now, fans will have to wait for the official announcement from Vyjayanthi Movies and Nag Ashwin. Till then, the identity of the actor who will play Sumati’s character is not known. Kalki 2 Remains one of the industry’s biggest secrets.
