The controversy over the alleged will of late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor intensified in the Delhi High Court on November 21, as Priya Kapoor’s legal team faced fresh scrutiny over errors, missing procedures and unresolved contradictions.

For the second consecutive day, the bench pressed the defense on why there were basic factual mistakes in the document – such as misspelled names, wrong gender, wrong addresses, selective list of beneficiaries, and notably, no list of assets. Priya’s lawyer reiterated earlier explanations but failed to provide any new arguments, supporting material or evidence that Sanjay had ever seen, reviewed or approved the will.
The matter follows Thursday’s hearing where senior lawyer Rajiv Nair attempted to defend the inaccuracies through the “template theory” – suggesting that the will borrowed sections from the will of Sanjay’s mother, Rani Kapoor. The court questioned why a billionaire would rely on his mother’s will and yet ignore basic facts about her children, assets and even her gender.
Friday’s proceedings deepened the discrepancies. The defense was unable to explain why Rani Kapoor’s will was notarized and procedurally correct, while Sanjay’s will, which included a much larger estate, was neither notarized nor registered. No emails, messages, notes or instructions from Sanjay referencing the document have been produced. Digital trails indicate that the file originated from a device with no connection to the late industrialist.
Another issue of concern was the attempt by the defense to mix two unrelated cases: children’s expenses under the consent terms of the divorce and claimed benefits of Rs 2,000 crore from the RK Family Trust. While Priya’s side suggested these were interchangeable, court records show the payments were mandatory obligations under the agreed terms and now rest with the estate. Despite claims of massive trust benefits, not a single rupee has reportedly been transferred to the children.
The court also revisited unresolved issues raised on Thursday, including delayed disclosure of the will, efforts to secure signatures before sharing it and persistence of factual discrepancies. Priya’s lawyers could not give satisfactory answers on any of these points.
During the two-day hearing, the pattern highlighted by the bench has remained consistent: the defense has not clarified document errors, could not establish Sanjay Kapoor’s involvement, and has continued to link regular payments with trust assets.
