Puthandu 2025: Puthandu, also known as the Tamil New Year, is observed to mark the beginning of a new calendar year for the Tamil -speaking community worldwide. Puthandu is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month of Chithirai and this year, it is being celebrated on Monday (April 14) with families and revelations in the celebration.
According to ancient scriptures, Lord Brahma began the creation of the universe on the auspicious day of Puthandu. Devotees also believe that Lord Indra reached Earth on this day to bring peace, hope and happiness.

On this day, the people of the southern Indian state, especially from the business community, mark the day with the first financial transactions of the day, known as kai-wisdom.
Tamil people get up early in the morning and decorate their homes with flowers and welcome the guest in the houses. A tray with fruits, flowers and a lamp is placed on the altar where domestic gods are kept. People also visit local temples and wish a rich and healthy New Year.
A traditional dish called Mangai-Pachdi, made with jaggery, mustard, raw mango, neem leaves and red chili, is tasted by Tamilians, which symbolizes Puthandu.
