In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Varma explained, “My first instinct was to cast Shah Rukh Khan. I went and narrated the story to him, and he was interested in it. But I somehow felt that Shah Rukh has this natural body language, is very energetic, he is like a live wire. The idea of Malik’s character was of a subtle person, laid-back and cool-headed when he thinks. I felt that Shah Rukh had this natural body language. The energy will go against it. That. Keeping Shahrukh still in the film would be injustice to both him and the film.
Varma emphasized the difference in acting styles, saying, “I think there is a performing actor and then there is an actor. I am not saying that one is better than the other, but it is just a different style of acting. A person like Shah Rukh should be left on his own. I think the director is trying to fit him into a different kind of character, which will not work. But Ajay was naturally suitable for that role, he is very calm.
