Ranbir Kapoor to relaunch RK Studios with his directorial debut and collaboration with Ayan Mukerji, Deepika Padukone: Report
As part of the revival, Ranbir aims to re-establish the studio as a major creative hub in Mumbai, possibly including an office space and screening theater to foster collaboration in the industry. The initiative also marks the continuation of his late father Rishi Kapoor’s dream of carrying forward the family’s cinematic legacy. With Ranbir’s directorial debut, the revived studio will be supporting projects from some of Bollywood’s top talent, including collaborations with Deepika Padukone and director Ayan Mukherjee.
The reopening of RK Studios is expected to be a grand event, paying tribute to its golden era under Raj Kapoor, and acting as a symbolic transfer of the torch to the next generation of filmmakers. This important step cements Ranbir Kapoor’s role not only as a leading actor but also as a custodian of one of the most treasured legacies of Indian cinema.
RK Studios, founded by the great Raj Kapoor in 1948, has produced some of the most iconic films of Indian cinema, including Rogue (1951), rain (1949), My name is Joker (1970), policeman (1973), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), love disease (1982), and Oh Lord Ram, Your River Ganga has become dirty (1985), which was Kapoor’s last film before his death.
The last film produced under the RK Films banner was come let’s go back now (1999), directed by Rishi Kapoor. Over time, RK Studios faced decline as the film industry shifted its location to the northern suburbs of Mumbai. The final blow was a studio fire during the shooting of a reality show in 2017, which destroyed priceless memorabilia, costumes and the physical studio space. Due to rising maintenance costs and impracticality of reconstruction, the Kapoor family decided to sell RK Studios, marking the end of an era for the historic studio.
