Singer Kumar Sanu and his ex-wife Rita Bhattacharya are once again in the news as a legal dispute has surfaced years after their divorce. The veteran playback singer filed a defamation suit in the Bombay High Court against Bhattacharya, alleging that recent interviews given by him contained defamatory comments that damaged her reputation and violated the terms of their divorce settlement.
Rita Bhattacharya breaks silence after Kumar Sanu’s Rs 50 crore defamation suit, appeals for peace
In their petition, Sanu’s legal team led by lawyer Sana Raees Khan has sought damages of Rs 50 crore and demanded that the interviews be removed from various entertainment platforms. The lawsuit claims Bhattacharya’s statements violate a clause in their 2001 divorce agreement that prohibits either party from publicly making allegations against the other.
Reacting publicly for the first time since the notice was issued, Bhattacharya described his shock at the legal action, especially the financial demand involved. In an interview to ETimes, he said, “In the paper he has sent me, he is asking for Rs 50 crore. I don’t know how Sanu is dreaming that I have so much money. It is really sad. I am shocked. He is filing a case against the mother of his three elder sons.”
The conflict partly stems from comments made in media interviews and social media reactions earlier this year, including reactions to actor Kunika Sadanand’s comments about a past relationship with a married man. Bhattacharya and his son, Jaan Sanu, responded on social platforms, leading to further investigation and subsequent prosecution.
She further added, “I never got a chance to talk to him. Neither did my children ever get a chance to talk to him because he has always blocked us. I tried calling Sanu, but he never picked up our calls. We are blocked on his number.” “I contacted his secretary and requested him to please stop this. This is a huge insult. My son was getting married, and the in-laws were asking questions. I requested several times. I have all the messages and recordings on my phone.”
Bhattacharya further said, “I am 63 years old and again I will have to fight in the court. The first time he took me to the court, I was pregnant with Jaan. Now again, at this age, I have to go through this. I will meet Sanu in the court after 31 years. This is very humiliating. My children are not children. They are grown men. My elder son will be 37, my second son will be 34, and Jaan is already 31. I Don’t think it’s their crime that they’re answering to people.”
She also hinted that she may pursue a counter-case, saying, “I will see him in court. And I would request Sanu with folded hands – just try to be a good human being and be a father to my three children. If you can’t love us, at least don’t bother us and harass us anymore.”
Concluding her remarks, Bhattacharya made a heartfelt appeal to her ex-husband, urging him to “be a good man and be a father to my three children” and to stop what she described as harassment. It is expected that the court will hear this matter this month.
