What started as a traditional inheritance dispute has taken a sharp legal turn after purported call detail records involving Priya Kapoor surfaced on social media late Tuesday night, sparking a wider discussion about the ongoing battle over the estate of late auto-component industrialist Sanjay Kapoor.

The alleged records, which quickly circulated online and were debated on television panels within hours, appear to show that Priya Kapoor’s mobile phone was located in New Delhi on March 21, 2025. This date is significant, as Kapoor had said in an affidavit before the Delhi High Court that she was physically present in Gurugram on the same day during the execution of Sanjay Kapoor’s controversial will.
If proven and accepted by the court, the alleged discrepancy could be significant in a case involving assets worth around Rs 30,000 crore. Legal experts say discrepancies between sworn statements and electronic evidence, if left unexplained, could bring the judicial investigation closer.
“Courts become extremely cautious when an affidavit conflicts with electronic evidence,” said lawyer Swapnil Kothari. “Even a single inconsistency can cause a re-examination of the larger narrative.”
This development has come at a time when the objections raised by Sanjay Kapoor’s children Samaira and Kiaan are already under consideration. Previous filings have raised questions about the authenticity of the will, pointing to spelling errors, incorrect pronoun usage for the testator and internal inconsistencies within the document. Although such issues may seem minor in isolation, critics argue that their cumulative impact requires closer examination.
Senior advocate Ashok Paranjape underlined the importance of accuracy in testamentary documents of vital value. “In a will of this magnitude, the paperwork must be spotless,” he said, adding that the testimony of a credible witness is crucial regarding the execution of the will.
At the same time, family law expert Mrinalini Deshmukh clarified that the physical presence of the beneficiary at the time of execution of the will is not a legal requirement. This observation has further sharpened the question as to why her presence was so strongly emphasized in Priya Kapoor’s affidavit, if it was not legally required.
Legal observers caution against drawing conclusions at this stage. Advocate Prem Rajani said that in high-value inheritance disputes, courts carefully examine each document and the surrounding circumstances. “Precision, consistency and intent all matter,” he said.
The Delhi High Court is yet to determine whether the alleged call records will be admissible as evidence and what value, if any, they will have. For now, the emergence of the alleged digital trail has added another layer to an already complex legal battle, turning a family inheritance dispute into a closely watched courtroom contest.
