Two of Bollywood’s biggest production powerhouses – Yash Raj Films and Shah Rukh Khan-backed Red Chillies Entertainment – are reportedly exploring opportunities in the fast-growing micro drama segment, hinting at a possible new content battle in 2026.

Shahrukh Khan’s Red Chillies and Yash Raj Films eyeing boom in micro drama: Report
According to multiple industry sources, both studios are independently assessing short-form scripted content through their digital divisions as demand grows for quick, mobile-first entertainment built around binge-friendly episodes. While no official announcement has been made yet, insiders suggest the talks are part of a broader shift among established studios looking to strengthen their digital footprint.
Of the two, Yash Raj Films is believed to be leading in its strategy through the company’s streaming-focused arm, YRF Entertainment. Industry observers have linked this direction to the recent appointment of Saugata Mukherjee, whose arrival is being seen as a strong indicator of YRF’s intention to increase premium digital content.
Mukherjee previously played a key role in shaping the original programming at SonyLIV, where he was associated with several narrative-based shows, helping the platform carve out a niche in the crowded OTT space. His expertise in premium and differentiated storytelling is now expected to contribute to the next phase of digital expansion for YRF.
Meanwhile, Red Chillies Entertainment has also repeatedly appeared in industry discussions regarding micro drama. Sources say an internal evaluation of the initial phase is underway, although plans are still in the early stages.
The reported interest comes as India’s micro play ecosystem continues to grow. Several platforms have already entered this category, including JioHotstar’s Tadka, ZEE5’s Bullet, Amazon MX Player’s Fatafat, Tata Play’s Shots, as well as players like Kuku TV, QuickTV and StoryTV.
The timing of this potential move is notable, as India’s broader interactive media market – across audio streaming, niche content communities and micro-storytelling formats – is projected to see major growth by FY2030.
Although reports insist that Yash Raj Films and Red Chillies Entertainment are moving in that direction, both the production houses are yet to issue any statement on the same or make any official announcement.
