Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari ended its extended opening week on a bad note. The film has collected Rs 41.50 crore nett in 8 days of its theatrical release, with Rs 1.75 crore to Rs 2 crore coming on Thursday. Weekday holding was initially better thanks to Buy-One-Get-One deals, but even that is losing steam now. In fact, collections are now at a very low level. However, the weekdays did enough for the film to cross the Rs 50 crore net mark at the Indian box office.
However, this won’t change the fate of the film at the box office as it has already tanked in its opening weekend itself. Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s film will end in another failure.
Post-pandemic, genre or mid-range films in general are struggling, with a major factor being the erosion of the cinematic base by digital. The eight-week period, intended to protect theatrical activity, turns out to be little more than a gate on an open fence. Larger scale event films, supported by anticipation, can still overcome this problem, but mid-sized films without anticipation factor are relegated to OTT films by audiences since they only have to wait eight weeks to see them. There are some films that are well-reviewed and pass through, but even they don’t score as high as they would have back in the day. Jolly LLB 3 and Sitaare Zameen Par are two great examples this year.
Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari had a pretty good trailer. The songs weren’t big hits but they were good. In the past, this would have given the film an opening. As of now, this has not helped the company as the audience is more than just waiting for the OTT premiere. The industry needs to make this wait inconvenient by extending the window to around six months, otherwise it’s difficult for the genre and mid-sized films.
