Sunny Sanskari’s Tulsi Kumari Lifetime Box Office: Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s rom-com closes at Rs 92 crore globally

Sunny Sanskari’s Tulsi Kumari has almost finished its theatrical run as the romantic comedy is set to end its box office journey around Rs. ₹92 crore globally (GBOC). Released on the Gandhi Jayanti weekend with a relatively bigger film, Kantara: Chapter 1, the Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor starrer earned Rs. In India it is Rs 72 crore. 60 crores nett. It found some audiences in overseas markets, where it grossed approximately US$2.25 million (Rs. meet. 20 crores gross as per Indian currency.

The film mainly suffered from a slow start and then weak trends at the box office. A major reason behind its underperformance was mixed word-of-mouth promotion, with the film failing to gain mass popularity. Furthermore, it could not generate interest outside urban audiences with its promotional properties. The clash with Kantara: Chapter 1 hampered the prospects, as the Rishabh Shetty starrer left no room for Sunny Sanskari’s Tulsi Kumari to move forward.

Fans of Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor will have to wait a while to see their favorite stars make a proper comeback at the box office. The collections in India are higher than those of Chandu Champion, Metro In Dino and Param Sundari, more in the range of something like Bhediya, but that is not saying much, as all of these should have done better to emerge as theatrical successes.

The rom-com genre and midstream films in general are struggling in the post-pandemic times. One major reason for this is the erosion of the theatrical base by digital platforms. The current 8-week OTT window is directly undermining the theatrical business, forcing audiences to simply wait for streaming releases. The makers need time to extend the deadline to around 6 months and make the wait inconvenient for the audience. Otherwise, the genre is already suffering.
