The Supreme Court of India on Friday issued a notice to actress Karisma Kapoor in connection with a petition filed by Priya Kapoor, seeking access to detailed records of the 2016 divorce proceedings between Karisma and her late husband, businessman Sanjay Kapoor. The apex court bench led by Justice AS Chandurkar has directed Karisma Kapoor to file her reply within two weeks.

Priya Kapoor’s plea comes amid the ongoing and complex inheritance dispute related to the estate of Sanjay Kapoor, who died in June 2025. The legal battle centers on the validity of a will allegedly executed by Sanjay in March 2025, which largely favors Priya Kapoor, his third wife, and is challenged by Sanjay’s children from his marriage to Karisma Kapoor. Sanjay’s assets are reported to be valued at around ₹30,000 crore, although the exact value and structure remains a matter of dispute.
Priya Kapoor, in her application, said that she needs certified copies of the entire divorce file from 2016, which includes the divorce petition, all contracts, court orders, settlement agreements and related documents. He argued that access to these records is necessary for official purposes in the succession proceedings before the Delhi High Court, where multiple parties are contesting control over the late industrialist’s estate.
The divorce between Sanjay Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor was finalized in 2016 after the couple agreed to settle all disputes, including matters related to financial arrangements and the custody of their two children. Priya Kapoor has argued that, as a legal heir after Sanjay’s death, she has a direct interest in understanding the terms of that agreement.
Sanjay Kapoor’s children – daughter Samaira Kapoor (20) and son Kiyan Raj Kapoor (15) – have also actively challenged the validity of the will presented in the High Court, alleging discrepancies and possible forgery. In the related filing, they have pointed out inconsistencies in the digital evidence and affidavits related to the execution of the will.
The Supreme Court notice to Karisma Kapoor outlines the wide scope of legal issues beyond the will, including background material that could shed light on prior financial arrangements and family obligations. It remains to be seen how and what impact these documents may have on the wider heritage saga.
After Karisma Kapoor’s reply is filed, the Supreme Court will review it. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court continues to hear cases related to property division and authenticity of wills.
