Five years after the tragic death of Sushant Singh Rajput, the late actor’s family has decided to challenge the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) closure report which concluded that the 34-year-old star died by suicide. The report cleared actress Rhea Chakraborty of all charges, but Sushant’s family has strongly opposed the findings, calling the investigation “incomplete” and “misleading”.
Sushant Singh Rajput’s family files protest petition calling CBI probe into his death “incomplete and misleading”
The CBI, in its March 2025 report, denied any wrongdoing and said there was no evidence to prove that Rhea Chakraborty drove Rajput to suicide or misused his finances. It stressed that the actor was alone in his Bandra apartment between June 8 and June 14, 2020 – the day he was found dead – and neither Rhea nor her brother Showik had visited him during that period.
However, Sushant’s family does not agree with this. According to a report in Mid-Day, his lawyer, Advocate Varun Singh, criticized the report, alleging laxity in the investigation. “This is nothing but posturing. If the CBI wanted to reveal the truth, it should have submitted all the supporting documents – chats, technical data, witness statements and medical records. We will file a protest petition against this closure report, which is based on a shoddy investigation,” Singh said.
The CBI’s plea also included two closure reports filed earlier this year. The first addressed the complaint filed by Sushant’s father KK Singh in Patna, accusing Rhea and her family of forcing the actor to commit suicide and mishandling his finances. In the second case, Rhea had filed a case against Sushant’s sisters in Mumbai.
The agency’s findings further stated that Rajput’s financial affairs were handled in a transparent manner by his chartered accountant and lawyer. It also deemed the actor’s expenses on Rhea as legitimate and voluntary – including her 2019 trip to Europe. Responding to these claims, Varun Singh said that the CBI’s findings lack transparency, saying, “Just claiming that money was not withdrawn from Sushant’s account is not enough. The CBI will have to produce detailed bank statements to prove its findings. This weak report will not hold up in court.”
The next hearing of the case will be held on December 20 in a Patna court, where the family wants to formally challenge the CBI closure report.
