Earlier speculations had linked Ananya Panday to the lead role, but a latest report from Mid-Day now indicates that Nair has opted to reunite with Maniktala for the ambitious project. The film is said to be a period drama based in India, Hungary and France, which aims to showcase the life and art of Sher-Gil – considered one of the most important modernist painters of the early 20th century, whose work fused European and Indian aesthetics.
According to the report, the story will explore Amrita’s artistic journey as well as her relationships with key people in her life, including her father Umrao Singh Shergil Majithia, her husband Victor Egan, fiancé Yusuf Ali Khan and close friend Jawaharlal Nehru. In 2023, actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Vicky Kaushal and Jim Sarbh were reportedly approached for important roles.
Nair, who has been developing the project for nearly four years, is said to be planning to start production by the end of the year if everything goes as per schedule. The filmmaker’s vision reportedly extends beyond a traditional biopic; She seeks to highlight Shergil’s influence in shaping the story of Indian modern art while introducing his legacy to a wider international audience.
